Spanish water utility tackles disinfection with measurement and control solutions

To treat and discharge drinking water, a drinking water pumping station in eastern Spain needs to monitor the concentration of treatment substances such as free chlorine in the water to ensure optimum disinfection of the drinking water making it suitable for consumption.

In an optimally controlled disinfection process, analysers continually measure the presence of chemical compounds such as disinfectants in the water in accordance with local regulations.

The equipment installed for this purpose had a small peristaltic pump adding sufficient chemical to correct the pH value for an accurate measurement. Subsequently, the reagent for measuring free chlorine was added. These chemicals however, were kept in separate plastic containers located in a box with the rest of the mechanisms necessary for measurement and control. The chemicals — both the corrector and the reagent — were affected by the heat, jeopardising the reliability of the measurement.

To make matters worse, the chemical inlet tubes were subject to rapid wear due to the operation of the peristaltic pump and needed to be replaced quite frequently. Moreover, in order to achieve efficient control, sampling was sequential but very frequent. All things considered, the customer’s existing analog solution was far from optimal.

The system serves as an application suite with slot immersion sensors for monitoring and controlling disinfectants, pH, ORP, conductivity, turbidity, organics and temperature. The flow of water through the battery is kept at the appropriate level by the current limiter. The water shortage is detected by the flow switch and an alarm is issued. With this solution, water parameters can be measured directly in the tank or pool without bypass lines and flow pools, simplifying measurement and control without complex maintenance requirements.

The solution provided is easy to install and simplifies maintenance, as each sensor is practically maintenance-free for a long period of time. The probe provides accurate and continuous measurement of free chlorine without the need for pH correction or the addition of any other chemicals, as with previous systems.

Once in use, the equipment will not cause any problems. This is a great improvement compared to the situation before. Installation of the equipment is very simple.

The system technology provides uninterrupted measurement, allows for continuous monitoring of the disinfection process and improves operator response in the event of a failure. This is different from other systems that measure free chlorine every few minutes. Today, after years of operation, the system works properly and is easy to maintain.

The device also has a high quality chlorine probe. Only a very small amount of electrolyte needs to be changed, and in most cases, no calibration is even required. In this case, the electrolyte is replaced approximately once a year. Data logging and real-time monitoring equipment are fully compatible.

This Spanish drinking water pumping station not only benefitted from the ease of installation and full connectivity with existing control and monitoring systems, but they were also able to reduce costs and the level of maintenance without sacrificing measurement accuracy.
